Tainan, the ancient capital of Taiwan, geographic location has served as a crucial maritime transit hub for the past 400 years, forming an intangible space connecting nearby sea and land. With ocean trade at its core, the tides represent the passage of time. Tainan was the first internationalized outpost 400 years ago, from which trade routes spread far and wide, fostering a diverse, culturally rich community deeply rooted in this region. This celebration in 2024 is of national importance, featuring an exhibition attended by President William Lai, former President Chen Shui-bian, prominent political and business figures, and artists from 18 countries worldwide.

Visual Concept: Sailboats as the Main Image

As an island nation, the imagery of sailboats best represents Taiwan's era 400 years ago. Sailboats marked
the beginning of Taiwan's trade, and Anping Harbor (Tainan) witnessed the majestic sight of sails catching the wind. These vessels navigated the seas guided by the compass, weaving 400 years of maritime history.
Not only did they shape modern-day Tainan, but they also helped construct what Taiwan is today.

Embracing the layered history of the past, Tainan has been more than a mere stopover for ships; it has
become a convergence point for culture and memory. The bustling vibrancy of this island today bears the
deep imprint of its history. I use copperplate printing and embossing to represent postcards from the past
400 years, creating a stark visual contrast that symbolizes the resilient spirit of the Taiwanese people. Now,
400 years later, I aim to convey a natural, leisurely lifestyle, encouraging people to stroll through historical
streets, feeling the flow of time and the rhythm of life. I design two cards: one symbolizing the past 400
years and the other representing the present. Together, they connect historical narratives across the abstract dimension of time.

This is how I make the letters
